How to Compress Images: Choose JPG, PNG or WebP

Updated 25 October 2026. A smaller image is useful only if it is still readable and accepted where you need to use it. Start with the required dimensions and format, keep the original, and compare the exported file rather than assuming that a quality slider will always reduce its size.
Choose the format before changing quality
| Your image | Start with | Check before saving |
|---|---|---|
| A camera photo without transparency | JPG or WebP | Faces, fine detail and the receiving site’s allowed formats |
| A logo, screenshot or flat graphic | Keep the PNG as a reference | Text edges; a JPG conversion may be larger or introduce ringing |
| An image with transparent areas | PNG or WebP | Transparency; Reownix’s JPG export fills it with white |
A real Reownix comparison
On 25 October 2026, we tested the live Image compressor in desktop Chrome with a synthetic 1200 × 800 PNG graphic containing a gradient, text and outlined shapes. The input was 23.05 KB. We kept the dimensions and used the displayed quality setting of 85 for both exports.
| File | Size shown by the tool | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Original PNG | 23.05 KB | 1200 × 800 |
| JPG, quality 85 | 84.51 KB | 1200 × 800 |
| WebP, quality 85 | 44.03 KB | 1200 × 800 |
Both exports were larger. Reownix displayed a warning that the result was not smaller than the original. For this graphic, keeping the original PNG was the better size choice. This is one test image, not a benchmark for photographs; output can vary with the image and browser encoder.
Compress an image step by step
- Open Image compressor and choose a copy of your image.
- Select a permitted format. Try JPG for photographs; compare PNG and WebP for graphics and transparency.
- Create the result and read its actual size. Inspect small lettering, hair, texture and high-contrast edges.
- If the result is still too large, lower JPG or WebP quality gradually and compare again. Avoid repeated recompression of an already compressed result.
- If quality becomes unacceptable, return to the original and use the Image resizer to reduce pixel dimensions while preserving the aspect ratio.
- Download only the version that meets both the visual and size requirements.
When a form asks for less than 50 KB
Use Image under X KB for a size target. Treat 50 KB as an example, not a universal application requirement. Check whether your form also specifies width, height, file type and minimum resolution. A file can meet the byte limit and still fail because its dimensions are wrong.
Why the quality slider does little to PNG
PNG export is lossless. In browser canvas export, the quality parameter applies to formats such as JPEG and WebP; it is not a general PNG compression setting. See the browser canvas export documentation. Reownix also displays this limitation beside the format control.
Final checks and troubleshooting
- Blurry result: increase quality or retain more pixels. Enlarging a small original cannot recover detail that was never captured.
- White background: choose PNG or WebP if transparency matters.
- Processing fails: use a smaller image or close memory-heavy tabs. The tool displays its current file and pixel limits.
- Rejected upload: compare the downloaded file against every rule in the receiving form, then preview it there.
