Merge, Compress or Redact a PDF: Choose the Right Workflow

Best free online tools for PDF, images, files and productivity by Reownix

Updated 25 October 2026. Combining documents, reducing file size and hiding sensitive information are different jobs. Choose the operation that solves the actual problem, keep the original, and inspect the downloaded PDF in a separate viewer. A successful download alone does not prove that the document is ready to share.

Pick the operation you need

Your problem Reownix tool What to check afterwards
Several PDFs must become one Merge PDF Page count, sequence and orientation
You need only selected pages Split / extract PDF The intended pages are included, without unwanted pages
The document exceeds an upload limit Compress PDF Actual file size and readability at normal viewing size
Visible private information must be removed PDF redaction The exported document, including text search and every affected page

Merge documents in a controlled order

  1. Use copies of the source documents. Write the required order before selecting them.
  2. Open Merge PDF and select the files. Check the order shown in the tool rather than relying on the order in your device’s file picker.
  3. Create and download the combined result.
  4. Open the output separately and compare its total page count with the sum of the inputs. Check the transitions between documents.
  5. If the sequence is wrong, return to the original sources or use PDF page organiser to preview and reorder pages.

Do not assume that bookmarks, interactive forms, annotations or certificate signatures survive page copying unchanged. Check the features that matter to your use case. Editing a digitally signed document can invalidate the signature.

Understand Reownix PDF compression

The compression tools create image-based pages at reduced quality. This can help with scanned paperwork, but searchable text, links and form functionality may be lost. If you need selectable text or accessible document structure, preserve the original and consider a workflow that retains those features rather than rasterizing the document.

Open PDF under X KB when you have a target. The target is an attempt, not a guarantee: page count, image detail and minimum readable resolution limit how small a useful PDF can become. Inspect names, dates, small numbers and thin table lines. A smaller file is not better if an application reviewer cannot read it.

Redaction is different from drawing a box

A rectangle placed over text in an editable document can leave the underlying information available. Reownix’s PDF redaction tool is described as exporting flattened page images without the original text layer. Mark all relevant areas, export, then reopen the downloaded result and check the visible pages, text search and copy behaviour.

This check is not a forensic guarantee. Do not assume a visual tool has removed every possible item of metadata, attachment or hidden content. For high-risk documents, use a workflow that explicitly sanitizes hidden information and have the result reviewed appropriately. Adobe explains the distinction in its PDF sanitization guidance.

A sensible sequence for scanned paperwork

For an ordinary non-sensitive application bundle, assemble the required pages, verify the order, then reduce file size only if necessary. When private details must be removed, work from a separate copy and complete the redaction checks before sharing. Do not send the unredacted original alongside the edited result by mistake.

Troubleshooting and final checks

  • Large file fails: check the limits shown in the tool and split the task into smaller groups where appropriate. Browser memory is finite.
  • Text becomes blurry: use a less aggressive quality setting or keep more page pixels.
  • Scanned PDF has no extractable text: the text extractor is not OCR. An image-only scan needs OCR in a suitable application.
  • Signature looks right: a visible signature image is not a verified certificate-based digital signature.

Reownix processes file inputs in browser memory. Read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use, and keep an original copy. For photos and signatures prepared before building a PDF, use the application image checklist.
